Hello everyone,

It has happened. Andrew Huberman weighed into acupuncture and fertility. Ok, so he actually weighed into this topic in Episode 108 nearly 6 months ago (clearly I have some catching up to do).

So, Dr. Huberman talks about the positive effects of acupuncture on fertility, through “changes in the neural pathways that innervate the tissues and vascular input into the ovary and scrotum”. Erm. What? Yeah. Us too.

Let’s break it down.👇

Acupuncture and Female Fertility

A meta analysis of over 27 studies and 7,600+ patients showed improved implantation rates, clinical pregnancy rates and live birth rates in patients who had received acupuncture (source). But how? According to research, acupuncture works in three main ways: 1) by mediating neurotransmitters that affect reproductive hormones and organs, 2) by stimulating blood flow to the uterus (supporting embryo implantation) and 3) by reducing cortisol (the stress hormone).

Accupuncture and Male Fertility

Accupuncture can help increase blood flow through the small blood vessels of the testes, which improves delivery of nutrients to developing sperm cells. A meta analysis of the available data concludes that whilst there is some sign of sperm quality improving with acupuncture, the data is too patchy to confidently recommend it for male fertility (source). The good news is that it won’t do you any harm, so you might as well give it a go if it’s accessible to you. And no, needles do not go where you fear they might, don’t worry.

What should you do now?

If you can access acupuncture and are ok with needles, give it a go. If you can’t access acupuncture, don’t stress. It’s a small boost, not a game changer.

If you have a Huberman Husband (a what? Meet one 👉 here) who foists all the biohacking trends upon you, well, good luck with that. And… this is one biohacking trend we approve of when it comes to fertility, especially as acupuncture is one of only two complementary therapies recognised by the HFEA. If you are the Huberman Husband, we see you 👀 You’re doing great, you’ll live forever, keep it up.

Warm wishes,
Tess, Co-founder and CEO of Béa Fertility
